Our Slack Community

INTRODUCTION TO SLACK

Rhize is a community based in Slack.

It's important to understand how to use Slack so you can get the most out of the community!

We've selected some content that we think would be best to learn to use Slack.

CREATING YOUR SLACK ACCOUNT

Slack Guide: Getting started for new Slack user

#CHANNELS

Slack organizes conversations into dedicated spaces called channels. Channels bring order and clarity to the community.

Slack Guide: What is a channel?

THREADS

Threads help you create organized discussions around specific messages. They let you discuss a topic in more detail without adding clutter to a channel or direct message (DM) conversation.

MESSAGES

In Slack, conversations happen in channels and direct messages (DMs). Messages can be more than just words. As you’re typing your message, use the icons below the message field to add attachments, formatting, and more:

  • Add a file

  • Record a video clip

  • Record an audio clip

  • Add an emoji

  • Mention someone

  • Show or hide formatting tools

REACTIONS

Emojis are a spin on common emoticons. In Slack, emojis are both fun and helpful for getting work done — use them to enhance your messages or add emoji reactions to quickly respond to messages.

BEST PRACTICES

Join the #channels

Rhize has a number of #channels to join to be part of various conversations.

Rhize Best Practice: Channels bring order and clarity to work — with the right people and information in one place, we can share ideas, make decisions, and move our career forward.

In the Rhize Slack community we want everyone to be in the following #channels:

  • #introductions

  • #wins

Slack Guide: Join a channel

Utilize other #channels

We also offer many more specific #channels to help you get the most out of this robust community.  You can search for specific topics, industries, and more. Make sure to use the most relevant #channel for your questions, comments, and posts.

We've created a consistent naming convention so everyone can quickly identify which #channel has what they need.

  • IND - Industry

  • INT - Interests

  • INFO - Informational Channels

  • RGN - Region

  • SUPPORT - Support Channels

Rhize Best Practice: Join additional #channels to stay engaged and connect! Be sure to start any conversations in the most appropriate #channel

Slack Guide: Join a channel

Start a Direct Message

Direct messages (DMs) are smaller conversations in Slack that happen outside of channels. DMs work well for one-off conversations that don’t require an entire channel of people to weigh in, like if you wanted to ask someone for specific support or help.

Rhize Best Practice: You have access to direct message other members of the community or create a direct message small group to have a conversation outside of the #channels. Be kind and respectful with all communication.

Slack Guide: Understand direct messages

Use the Search feature

With all the community engagement, we will effectively create a searchable archive of conversations, information, and support.

Rhize Best Practice: Use the search bar to find previous threads that may provide answers or insights.

Should I Google or Slack it?

Got a question for the group? Use the search feature to see if the question has been asked already.

If it's not already been posted or is specific to you, go ahead and post it in the appropriate channel! Be sure to provide  Here's an example:

Let's say you have a resume already started, but are feeling like you need to make improvements.

DON'T: Start a thread with, "Can someone help me with my resume?" or "I'm looking for a job, please give me feedback on my resume!"

DO: Go to #info-resume-cover-letter, and write your question with as much information as possible to provide as much information as possible initially.

  • I'm in the _____ industry and looking for jobs with the title ______. I feel like my resume isn't getting enough traction, and I want to make sure I'm highlighting my last role to make that transition. I've already utilized chatgpt and feel stuck. I'm hoping for some feedback on the bullet points listed below.

  • Then you could just list the specific bullet points instead of attaching your resume. Unless you wanted to share your resume.

Why this is a great message:

✔️ Has the industry, title, maybe even experience
✔️ You've already used some strategies outside Rhize
✔️ Asking a specific question
✔️ Providing as much detail as possible initially
✔️ Was posted in #info-resume-cover-letter
